***************************************************************** * * * OpenStreetMap on Garmin * * * * --andyg@ravenfamily.org * * * ***************************************************************** Installation: ------------- To install any of these maps on your Garmin GPS: 1: Unzip the downloaded file. 2: Connect your Garmin and go to Setup > Interface > Mass Storage Mode. 3: Your Garmin is now a USB stick. Locate the \garmin folder on it. 4: The GMAPSUPP.IMG file is the current maps. Either delete it or copy it to your computer somewhere safe. 5: Now copy the GMAPSUPP.IMG file you unzipped to the \garmin folder. 6: Restart the device. There's also OSM-Garmin-Munky-Tiles, which is the IMG tiles for loading into MapSource in chunks - useful if you don't have lots of storage on your GPS. Feedback is always welcome: andyg@ravenfamily.org Have fun! --AndyGates (http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/User:Andygates) Recent Changes -------------- 25 February 02010: * Added country name :) * Changed how the map is tiled. It's now one big glom, which behave better when using MapSource etc to select across borders. 19 November 02009: * Added beaches, 'rock' (not yet a standard tag, experimenting). * Added clifftop marking with a dagged line. 15 October 02009: * Added labels for localities, bays and headlands. * Added marking for cliffs (oops! as marsh - this will be amended). * Added a bright green-on-green blaze for long-distance paths such as the South West Coast Path. 01 October 02009: * Added doctors' surgeries (amenity=doctors). * Added marsh and wetland marking. * Added quarry and building site marking. 17 September 02009: * Experimental streetnames and sea in the Isle of Man map. 10 September 02009: * Memorials and Roadside Crosses added. * Coastline styling improved (more to come on this). 27 August 02009: * Tidied marinas and docks to the general water colour. 21 August 02009: * Added named mountain passes after riding up the Col de l'Iseran and finding no waypoint there! OSM tag mountain_pass=yes is rendered as the Garmin 'peak' icon. 31 July 02009: * Corrected stations so that they appear as stations and not zebra crossings (!) * Trunk roads should now appear as "road" instead of "line" when unnamed, and will appear better in routing. 31 May 02009: * An out-of-sequence update to get pubs appearing properly - you can find them in Find > Entertainment. 29 May 02009: * Changed trunk roads to green, to match general usage. * Added a distinctive trail type for bridleways. * Added abandoned railways (OSM tag railway=abandoned) as general trail-type ways, after being up on Dartmoor and noticing that several useful hiking trails which were tagged thus didn't show up. * New icon for cafes, to match the OSM "cup of tea". * Bicycle rental added with the same icon as bike shops (OSM tag amenity = bicycle_rental). * Tidied up roundabout rendering. 24 April 02009: * Adjusted the style for power lines (larger lighting-bolt) * Adjusted the style for cycleways (centreline) * Added point icons for fords. About These Maps ---------------- These maps are taken from OpenStreetMap on a roughly weekly basis. They're good for loading onto a Garmin GPS (such as the etrex mapping series). They are completely free to download, use, and share. The maps are date-stamped. They are built from that day's map data and the UK and Ireland and the SMC version of NASA's topological data. All of these maps are routable. If you get wacky routing, there are several reasons: first, routing is sometimes just bizarre, so check that you don't have "avoid highways" or something else turned on. Second, there may be missing information on the map. Either edit the map at www.openstreetmap.org yourself (it's like Wikipedia, get stuck in) or let me know. Third, routing is a pretty new feature and you may have found a bug. Congratulations! :) For what it's worth, I find the routing works reliably. There may be two main maps: OSM-Garmin-Default ------------------ This is rendered with the default styles; it's straight up and down. The style and POI are similar to the regular Garmin maps you might buy. OSM-Garmin-Munky ---------------- This is my pet style. I'm trying to make a perfectly lovely One Map To Rule Them All, and it's a work in progress. Differences from the default are: Many more POI including bike shops, and better POI naming in Garmin device searches. Friendly icon set with UK style. Roads coloured to UK map conventions. Cycleways marked out with a blue blaze. Many more highway POI - lights, roundabouts, and gates and steps.
