Singularity

Note to self

Nov.12, 2008, filed under Miscellany

When you are forced to leave your car at home for the rest of the week owing to the howling coming from the offside rear wheel bearing, which means the car shouldn’t be used until your dad has taken it away and fixed it; and you have to take the bike to work (shame!) but you need to take all your kit with you because you’ve been on standby: remember that a touring bike with two panniers on the back has all the aerodynamic grace of a housebrick.

No, you will not be as fast as you usually are on your fixie, even though you’ve got more and bigger gears.

You can’t make it go as fast as you usually are on your fixie because there’s a headwind. Housebrick + Headwind = Speed Fail.

Relax. Enjoy the sunshine. Enjoy the superior comfort over potholes of the 700x28c tyres. Revel in those additional seconds spent in the warm embrace of the Edinburgh Bakery‘s biscuity hug. Content yourself in the knowledge that the extra time taken getting to work equates to a few extra calories that can be spent on cake. Don’t worry about losing hours on flexi. You can make them up later. Appreciate the opportunity to give Fingal some socialising opportunity and some fresh air.

Bless him.
